A moving truck and cardboard
boxes could be seen outside 10 Downing Street yesterday as David Cameron began
to pack up and make way for his replacement, Theresa May. Energy Secretary
Andrea Leadsom's sudden withdrawal from the leadership race on Monday has led
to fast-track political change in the UK. Cameron presided over the last meeting
of his government yesterday with May still Home Secretary. And today he will
endure his last session of Prime Minister's questions in the House of Commons,
before officially presenting his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II and
proposing May as his substitute.
Britain's new Prime Minister took advantage of the government
meeting to present some of the lines to be followed by her future cabinet,
focusing particularly on policies to improve opportunities for the poor. She
also began work on setting up her future team.
Meanwhile, European leaders began to increase the pressure on
May to start talks as soon as possible. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said
that it is the new PM's job to mark the way for the future relationship between
the UK and the EU and stressed that there will be no negotiations until London
formalises its request for departure, or in other words, invokes the infamous
article 50.
